How do you create custom QR codes?

Creating custom QR codes is free, easy, and great for marketing purposes. Before we get into how to create your own code, let’s first go over some basics.

QR codes have been around for a while but have increased in popularity over the last few years. These codes are, in most cases, black squares on a white square background. Some generators have options which allow you to play with color and even add a logo which helps with branding.

The code can have whatever information you choose to share within it and it can only be read by scanning a web-enabled smartphone over the image. The phone must also have a QR code reader installed. Once the image is scanned, a URL, photo, video, or contact details can be viewed. QR codes are used by businesses large and small including freelancers, bloggers, retailers, restaurants, real estate agents, and more. They can be found on websites, stickers, business cards, menus, flyers, display ads, and clothing.

The images used in this demonstration are actual screenshots of the process of creating (custom QR Codes).

Step 1

The first thing I recommend when creating a custom QR code is to do a Google search for QR code generators such as QRStuff.com. Under number one you have choices of the type of information you would like to share as shown in the image below.

Step 2

I am simply generating a code for this website so I entered the URL, http://CreatingAQRCode.org, into section two. As you can see in the image below, the code is already generated on the far right.

Step 3

The third step gives you the option to play with color. For this demonstration I chose a red instead of staying with the black and white color.

Step 4

You code is ready. You can see the live preview on the far right and section four gives you options to download the code, email the code, or print the code. In this step I have chosen to download and save it to my computer.

This is the final QR code created for this blog, CreatingAQRCode.org.

As you can see, creating a customized QR code is simple. There are also options to have the code printed on t-shirts, business cards, mugs, hats, tote bags, ties, magnets, buttons, stickers, and bumper stickers all through this one website. Creating your own custom code can be a lot of fun. There are many ways in which your personal QR code can be used and keep in mind that consumers enjoy deals and valuable information. Also remember that any website that your code links to should be optimized for mobile phone use. One last tip is to be sure to add instructions with your code such as how to scan the code and where they can download a compatible scanner.
